I love quotes. You knew that already, didn’t you? If you read my work here and at the places I write, you know that I like to include quotes along with a few words of my own. Today, this one sticks out for me:
“To get the full value of joy you must have someone to divide it with.”
Mark Twain was certainly one of the best writers around, and also one of the most quotable. His quips are so funny that perhaps that’s why this one really stands out. It’s serious, and it hits close to home. It’s really the key to life in so many cases.
It also speaks to the subject of loneliness. I’m passionate about getting people to recognize, acknowledge, and do something about loneliness. I’ve felt it at times in my life, and I know many others feel it now.
I think we’re a lonely society, despite our ability to connect instantly online. We don’t have time to see people, we think online friendships are the same as sitting in front of a friend and they aren’t. We need to see our pals. We need to hear their voices and admire their laugh lines and be inspired by the way they can tell a story that will make you laugh and cry at the same time. A Facebook post, while nice, doesn’t replace a hug.
Let’s make it our mission to get the full value of joy, as this quote suggests.
