If Life Were a Book

If life were a book,
and we could read ahead
to find out the ending,

the pages in between
would surely be filled with
kind words, love, and honesty.

But
instead we live day by day
reflecting back on the things we’ve done,
and, sometimes,
wondering why we did them.

Instead of realizing
that we do have the power
to write our own life’s story,
to control our own destiny,
we let life lead us around.

And we follow…
hoping that eventually we’ll end up
with a happy ending.

Friendship

Contains line from her poem, “Friendship.”

Friendship
is the one safe place to be entirely yourself.

Through the darkest periods,
through the times when you will be moody or crazy,
friends will overlook your shortcomings
and play up your strengths.

It is the place
to tell your worst joke,
the place that houses your secrets
the place that wraps a blanket of understanding
around all your troubles
the place that provides laughter through darkness
the place in which the picture you painted,
will be hung, and appreciated,
even if you yourself don’t think it’s worth appreciating.

It is the place
to bring your frown on a bad day
because it will be replaced with a smile.

Friendship is the place
in which shared laughter
is the most beautiful music of all.

It is the place
to announce aloud, your most sought after dream,
no matter how impossible,
no matter how crazy,
friends will help you launch your dreams
high into the sky
and even if that dream may fall
your friends
will hold out their hands
so your dream can land
in the open arms of their acceptance….

so you will have the courage
to launch them again.

The Difference Now

The difference now
is when pushed
I push back.

The difference now
is when I’m hurt
I’ll cry
openly
unashamed.
Why should I hide it?
Or pretend that I don’t care?
You know you hurt me.
My pretending only helped you,
not me.

The difference now
is that I’ll fight for the life
I want to live
and not the one
you think I should live.

The difference now
is that I make the definitions
and throw yours away.

The difference now
is when I walk in a room
and you guiltily look at each other
and stop talking
I’ll wonder who you’ll blame
for the problems in your life
after I move on.

The difference now
is that when you’re laughing
behind my back
I realize I must be ahead of you
and I’ll keep going.

Today I Will Thank Him

Today
I will look in the mirror
for the little girl I left behind,
and I will ask her to show me
how to giggle, again.

Today
I will talk to God,
and I will not ask Him
for a better job, a better house,
a better life….

Today
I will thank Him.
Sincerely thank Him
for giving me this interesting life,
filled with surprises
and the ability to laugh.

Today
I will let the phone ring
because those who are my friends
will understand,
and those who aren’t,
well…

I take for me.

I will let Cather calm my mind,
and Shakespeare ease my soul,
